Chapter Twelve

Tyler stood outside the back door of Baylee’s Bakery with two coffee cups in his hand. He’d stopped at Jamie’s Java and grabbed Eva’s favorite coffee, Christmas in a Cup, and decided to get one for himself. He wasn’t normally one for flavored coffees, but the chocolate minty treat was winning him over, not to mention the woman who introduced him to it.

They hadn’t seen each other since Saturday night. Sunday had been a busy day for Eva at the bakery and he’d ended up doing a workout with Drew and then staying for dinner with him and Casey while Baylee spent the evening with her mom, Jenny.

Today was Eva’s day off and she’d said she needed some time at the bakery to work on something for the holidays. She hadn’t shared details and he hadn’t pushed. Although he wanted to spend as much time as possible with Eva, he also wanted to be respectful of her schedule. She’d had a life and a job before they met, just like him. He hadn’t missed any workouts with Drew but found his thoughts filled with Eva more and more as time went on. He’d also given some serious thought to what was next for him. With Drew retiring after the next season, Tyler had a decision to make. He loved training and working with athletes but meeting Eva and spending more time in Silver Bay had him thinking seriously about wanting to be in one spot full-time. See what it was like to have a life that didn’t involve living out of a suitcase or sometimes trying to remember what city you were in when you woke up.

Saturday night had shifted things for him. Between the warm holiday cheer of the evening and those hot, steamy kisses, Tyler was beginning to see how much he would like a life that not only involved one place, but absolutely involved one woman. Eva.

When he reached the bakery, he held both cups in one hand and turned the knob of the back door. He wanted to be careful not to scare her. She didn’t know he was stopping by. He wanted to surprise her. The sound of music came through the opening, but so did another sound Tyler didn’t recognize at first. Leaning his head inside, the happiness of surprise turned to concern when he realized it was Eva crying.

Not just crying. He opened the door some more and looked inside. She was at the worktable, a four-tiered cake in front of her. It was covered in what looked like glittery white frosting that made Tyler think of fresh snow.

And yet Eva was muttering to herself what sounded like “never get this…total failure…what was I thinking?” as she spun a bowl in front of her with one hand while mixing whatever was inside with her other. There were various shades of blue all over her arms and hands and even her face. Those were streaked with tears, he noticed, and his gut clenched.

Baking cakes was her favorite thing.
